Lest we think that the U.S. is really beyond doing/thinking terrible things, this week we heard recordings of former president Nixon's comments that abortion would be appropriate in the case of "a black and a white." And then, there's this:

My biochemistry students read GK Chesterton's Eugenics and Other Evils in seminar class. The version we use includes quotes from the times (including the Holmes quote) by very prominent names arguing for eugenics. Thankfully WWII put an end to that particular discussion. For a time at least.
